I started writing in Mrs. Masarky’s first grade class. She put gold stars at the top of my handwritten stories and told me to keep writing. Twenty five years later she sat in the front row at a Barnes and Noble in my hometown on my first book tour. I’ve been lucky to have several writing mentors who inspired me, edited me, and encouraged me along the way. These books exist because of them.

I’m often asked what books exist for boys who lose their moms and also for women whose mothers are alive but unavailable. Here are some resources I recommend.

For Motherless Sons:

The Aftergrief: Finding Your Way Along the Long Arc of Loss, by Hope Edelman

The Loss That Is Forever: The Lifelong Impact of the Early Death of
a Mother or Father
, by Maxine Harris

Always Too Soon: Voices of Support for Those Who Have Lost Both Parents
by Allison Gilbert
